Skin Allergies
Skin conditions can be
caused by a number of different things. Living in a dry climate like Colorado can cause
the skin to lose moisture, especially in the winter months. Excessive sun exposure can
also lead to dryness of the skin. Dryness puts the skin at risk for cracking and
peeling, and also can lead to itching, redness, and increased risk for infection. Regular
moisturizing, using a hypoallergenic cream or lotion is essential for people at risk for
dry skin. This is especially true for young children and the elderly.
Allergies can also cause skin problems. In particular, food allergies, medication
allergies, or contact with certain chemical substances, cosmetics, plants (poison ivy), or
metals can lead to skin allergies. Typically, a person will complain of itching, redness,
swelling/inflammation, and even blister formation. Sometimes people will also develop
welt-like reactions called hives. Any part of the body
can be affected. Since a number of different things can cause skin allergies, if you
experience any of these symptoms, talking to your doctor as soon as possible may not only
help to identify the problem, but can also lead to rapid treatment.
